The Denver Broncos triumphed over the Seattle Seahawks with a 17-14 win, thanks to Wil Lutz’s 53-yard field goal in overtime. Seattle initially had possession in sudden death, but faced a crucial third-and-7 from their own 28-yard line. Quarterback Sam Darnold attempted a risky pass into double coverage, missing Denver cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian. McMillian intercepted the ball, positioning the Broncos advantageously at Seattle’s 43-yard line.
Denver’s coach Sean Payton emphasized clock management, running the ball thrice to center it for the field goal. Lutz’s kick sealed the game.
In the first half, the Broncos controlled possession and led 14-3 at halftime. J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey scored touchdowns. However, the second half told a different story. Bo Nix completed the game with a mere 107 passing yards, and the Broncos struggled offensively, gaining only 36 yards across eight possessions.
Seattle rallied in the fourth quarter, closing the gap with a touchdown and a two-point conversion. With just seconds left, Jason Myers’ 34-yard field goal sent the game into overtime.
The Denver defense held firm. Without Patrick Surtain II, they consistently pressured Darnold, recording five sacks and several turnovers. This defensive prowess was crucial in the Broncos’ victory. Nik Bonitto forced a fumble, Kris Abrams-Draine secured an interception, and McMillian’s overtime interception was decisive.
Despite Seattle’s 353 total yards and Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s 134 receiving yards, their three turnovers proved costly. Denver’s defense turned the tide, while the offense faced challenges that Coach Payton hopes to address before their next game against the Arizona Cardinals.
Denver’s record now stands at 4-2, just behind the undefeated Kansas City in the standings. With a short break ahead, the Broncos aim to refine their offensive strategies.
