Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer endorsed Representative Haley Stevens on Friday as the state approaches its U.S. Senate Democratic primary. Stevens, recognized as a centrist, competes against progressive Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, both leading the race as early voting commences on Saturday. Whitmer’s backing may benefit Stevens in a state where the governor has secured substantial victories in past elections.
Holding a gathering at a Teamsters hall in Detroit, Whitmer emphasized Stevens’ capability to succeed, highlighting her fighting spirit, alongside South Carolina Representative Jim Clyburn. Stevens has the support of Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and Michigan Senator Gary Peters, who is stepping down from his seat.
Meanwhile, El-Sayed, who gained attention with endorsements from Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, faces corporate opposition, as noted by a spokesperson for El-Sayed.
The primary is set for August 4, with the winner expected to challenge Republican former Representative Mike Rogers in November. Securing Michigan is seen as crucial for Democrats aiming to gain a majority in the U.S. Senate.
