Increasing Bear Encounters Challenge Residents in Lake Tahoe

Black bears are frequently breaking into homes around Lake Tahoe, leading residents to shell out substantial amounts for protection against wildlife. This year, South Lake Tahoe police received 174 bear-related calls, significantly up from 97 calls during the same period last year, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Incidents with bears entering homes are becoming more common. In one instance, a local couple was startled to find a bear standing in their living room while they were washing dishes. The bear roamed through the house, investigating a toothpaste tube in the bathroom and urinating on the floor before leaving. This marked the couple’s second bear intrusion within a month.

“I heard the most god-awful noise,” said resident Margaret Deanesly Ziegler. “I heard the house being wrenched, the wood being torn apart.”

In response to the rising encounters, homeowners are installing electric mats and reinforced doors, spending thousands to protect their homes. Margaret Deanesly Ziegler installed various deterrents, including electric measures and a steel door, costing about $7,500 for her cabin.

Bears are becoming a formidable challenge, as seen in a video where a bear rushed a homeowner outside his vacation home, leading him to use bear spray to make the animal flee. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife highlights that bears are motivated by food and investigate appealing smells.

The department advises eliminating food attractants and using bear-proof containers, electric fencing, or mats to block access. It warns of bears becoming increasingly bold when accustomed to human food, and these behaviors often pass from mother bears to their cubs.

Discussion among Lake Tahoe residents continues over whether bears or people are driving the problem. Some argue it stems from human actions, noting that proper handling of trash and food can prevent conflicts. Others, like one resident, shared experiences of bear encounters and adopted bear mats as a necessary measure.

Despite the challenges, some residents point out that living with bears can be manageable if precautions are taken. Black bears remain a regular presence, but handling food and trash responsibly can reduce confrontations.
