New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced criticism after his comments about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with an unexpected remark from Milwaukee Bucks forward Kyle Kuzma. The NBA player mocked Mamdani, calling him a “mayor playing president” and suggesting that Mamdani was more focused on appearances than governance.
Kyle Kuzma, wearing No. 18 for Milwaukee Bucks, raised his concerns on the social media platform X. In his post, Kuzma remarked, “This is 2026. People cosplaying as things they don’t have the authority, the talent, or the track record to actually be. Just for content.” He quote-tweeted Mamdani’s address, which called for Netanyahu’s arrest under an International Criminal Court warrant before the United Nations General Assembly.
Kuzma emphasized his point further, saying, “Everyone auditioning. Nobody building. We’re raising a generation that is learning the reward isn’t in doing the thing; it’s in looking like you did the thing.” He criticized those trying to appear professional or knowledgeable without the necessary credentials or experience, noting, “The clip is the career. The pose is the product.”
Mamdani’s video sparked diverse reactions within the NBA community. Players like Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving and San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama supported Mamdani by liking his Instagram post, where he accused Netanyahu of committing genocide against Palestinians and urged his arrest if he visits New York City.
While Mamdani’s stance attracted support from some, it also drew condemnation from Jewish organizations and political opponents. Critics challenged Mamdani for focusing on international issues instead of local concerns such as crime, sanitation, and housing affordability.
Despite Mamdani’s exploration of arrest possibilities for foreign leaders, he later admitted that New York City has no legal authority to arrest visiting officials. This further fueled criticism that Mamdani was overstepping his mayoral role.
Kuzma’s comments highlighted the division within the NBA regarding Mamdani’s rhetoric. While some players showed support for Mamdani’s message, Kuzma’s remark underscored a contrasting perspective within the league.
