Shanahan’s Temporary Absence at 49ers Training Camp

Coach Kyle Shanahan joined the practice field alongside general manager John Lynch, observing the San Francisco 49ers during their training session. His appearance was a welcomed sight, marking his first attendance since a car crash caused a concussion and other injuries.

‘I know he can’t stay away,’ linebacker Fred Warner remarked. Despite stepping back temporarily, Warner acknowledged Shanahan’s dedication to football.

Shanahan’s brief presence came as the 49ers began preparing for the upcoming season without him fully at the helm. Assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster assumes his duties for now. Shanahan’s injuries include a concussion, fractured ribs, nose, and hand. He awaits recovery before resuming full responsibilities.

During practice, Shanahan, sporting a cast, sunglasses, and a new mustache, interacted with players like Warner, Kyle Juszczyk, Christian McCaffrey, and Dre Greenlaw before his departure.

‘I knew it would be tough to keep him away,’ commented tackle Trent Williams. He acknowledged Shanahan’s passion, despite his need for rest. With veteran players and experienced coaches, the team functions smoothly during Shanahan’s absence.

The training camp plan remains consistent, set well before Shanahan’s incident. Foerster relies on coordinators like Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer to maintain the routine, adjusting small practice details as necessary.

With over three decades in the NFL, Foerster seamlessly manages the team. Williams praised Foerster, noting their long history and Foerster’s ability to step up.

Foerster previously worked with the Shanahans in Washington and joined the 49ers in 2019. Overcoming past challenges, Foerster expressed gratitude for the support of Shanahan and the organization, which he considers family.

Meanwhile, star defensive end Nick Bosa returned to the field for individual drills after recovering from a torn ACL last season. Observers noted no visible signs of the injury affecting his performance.

Additional training camp updates include:

  • OL Vederian Lowe left practice due to an ankle injury.
  • CB Nate Hobbs did not participate in practice.
  • The 49ers signed DT Kevin Givens after releasing Evan Anderson. Givens has been with the team since 2019.
  • Connor Colby will compete for the starting left guard position.
