San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan made an appearance at the team’s training camp after recovering from a car accident earlier this month that left him with several injuries.
Shanahan was seen on the field alongside general manager John Lynch during the team period, according to Matt Barrows from The Athletic. He wore sunglasses and a soft cast on his left hand. Swelling on his face appeared to have reduced since the accident.
Players including Kyle Juszczyk, Fred Warner, and Dre Greenlaw greeted Shanahan. He spent just over 30 minutes at the camp.
The 49ers initially reported his crash, stating that Shanahan sustained ‘non-life-threatening injuries.’ These injuries limited his role at the training camp.
Shanahan suffered a broken nose, three broken ribs, and a broken hand. His face required over 40 stitches, and he experienced a severe concussion from the July 14 crash near his home in northern California.
According to ESPN reporters Adam Schefter and Nick Wagoner, assistant head coach Chris Foerster is filling in for some of Shanahan’s duties. Lynch noted that a collaborative effort will be necessary to cover the head coach’s responsibilities until his full recovery.
Last season, Shanahan successfully led San Francisco to a 12-5 record, reaching the NFL Playoffs. The team defeated the Philadelphia Eagles but was later beaten by the Seattle Seahawks, who eventually won the Super Bowl.
The 49ers are among the top contenders for the 2027 Super Bowl. The team signed Pro Bowl wide receiver Mike Evans in the offseason, providing additional strength for quarterback Brock Purdy.
The 49ers start their preseason with a home game against the Tennessee Titans on August 13. It’s uncertain if Foerster will act as head coach for the match, as Shanahan still has concussion protocols to clear before resuming full-time duties.
The expectation is that Shanahan will coach the 49ers’ first regular-season game on September 10 against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
