Carly Simon Diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and Faces Health Challenges

Singer-songwriter Carly Simon has disclosed her diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. The 83-year-old musician, known for hits like “You’re So Vain,” shared her struggles in a statement released on Monday.

Simon initially attributed her physical difficulties to arthritis and recovery from hip and knee replacement surgeries. Despite these surgeries, her mobility continued to worsen.

At times, I could not walk without considerable help, Simon remarked, noting that her family realized there might be a more serious underlying issue.

Following an extensive evaluation at the Mayo Clinic, she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Simon took time to process the diagnosis before going public. She explained, “It has taken me some time to understand the diagnosis, to adjust to it, and to decide how much I wanted to say about it publicly.” She described Parkinson’s as unpredictable and shared details about symptoms like overwhelming fatigue.

Some days I’m so tired I can’t get the day moving at all, she explained.

She has started treatment with medication to mitigate symptoms but emphasized the unpredictable nature of the disorder.

There is no tidy or predictable schedule to the illness, she stated.

The Parkinson’s Foundation reports that around 1 million Americans have Parkinson’s disease. It affects movement due to the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells, causing symptoms such as tremors, slow movement, and muscle stiffness. No cure exists, but medications can help manage symptoms.

Simon also revealed undergoing surgery for basal cell carcinoma, a common skin cancer. Although the cancer was successfully removed, the surgery altered her appearance, influencing her choice to step away from the public eye.

Despite these challenges, Simon said music remains a source of comfort. She plans to release Comes in Waves on August 14, her first album of original songs since 2008.

It reminded me that illness can change your life without becoming the whole of your life, she noted.
