Conservatives mocked the national co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) after confirming radical policy ideas on Fox News. Megan Romer, the DSA co-chair, agreed to several controversial proposals during an interview with Shannon Bream.
“Are you advocating for abolishing the Senate?” Bream asked. “True,” Romer replied.
Romer confirmed the group’s support for abolishing major U.S. institutions such as the presidency, the Supreme Court, and ICE. She also mentioned plans to eliminate borders and prisons and shift corporations to public ownership.
Responses from conservative figures were swift. Sen. Ted Cruz labeled these ideas as “insane.” House Speaker Mike Johnson warned these policies signal “Communism” on U.S. shores. Actress Patricia Heaton simply wrote, “Yikes.”
GOP figures like House Majority Leader Steve Scalise noted the DSA’s growing influence, while Rep. Burgess Owens appreciated the group’s frankness. Tom Tiffany, a gubernatorial candidate, drew parallels between Romer’s remarks and other socialist candidates.
A spokesperson for Francesca Hong, a candidate accused of similar stances, refuted these claims. “Tom Tiffany is inventing quotes,” said Allison Geyer, Hong’s communications director.
Joe Mitchell, an Iowa Republican, accused Democrat Lindsay James of aligning with the DSA. James’ spokesperson, Jackson Smith, called Mitchell’s accusations “lies.”
The Virginia GOP urged Democrats to denounce these DSA positions. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann labeled the DSA as contrary to American values.
U.S. Sen. John Fetterman criticized the DSA on social media, questioning the Democratic party’s association with them. Bill Ackman, a critic of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, also expressed concern.
