Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Katie Britt have introduced a bipartisan bill targeting sanctions on Russia. During a discussion with Shannon Bream, Shaheen stressed the urgency of pressuring Vladimir Putin. Meanwhile, Britt reflected on the late Sen. Lindsey Graham’s strong stance on Iran.
Graham passed away suddenly at 71, and Washington, D.C., is set to honor him with two services on Tuesday. The first takes place at the U.S. Capitol’s rotunda, followed by a private service at the National Cathedral.
The services, attended by international leaders like Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, mark Graham’s impact in politics. Zelenskyy will speak to lawmakers, urging progress on Graham’s effort for stringent sanctions on Russia due to the Ukraine conflict.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal shared Graham’s thoughts on the sanctions package, emphasizing its importance to his legacy. “It’s a big deal. We all did well,” quoted Blumenthal, recalling Graham’s parting remarks. Blumenthal worked with Graham on this initiative and is proud of their collaboration.
The legislation, renamed in honor of Graham, continues with bipartisan support. It features severe penalties on Russian leadership and financial burdens such as tariffs up to 500% on Russian imports and tariffs up to 100% on countries purchasing Russian energy.
The bill also offers President Donald Trump a “national interest certification” to manage sanction waivers. The package targets Russia’s clandestine “shadow fleet,” transporting energy under radar.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune has prepared the bill for a key vote. Having discussed with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Thune anticipates bipartisan backing despite some concerns.
Passing this bill is symbolic of Graham’s renowned career in Washington. Rep. William Timmons fondly remembered Graham’s dedication, noting his service to the country was paramount throughout his life.
