Trapped in AEON Mall After Earthquake
In southern Japan, multiple people are trapped in an AEON Mall after a powerful earthquake struck the region. Local fire officials reported the incident, highlighting the severe damage to the mall’s structure. Witnesses heard an explosion on the second floor, and state broadcaster NHK showed images of numerous fire trucks stationed in the mall’s parking lot. The mall’s ceilings and facade crumbled, adding to the debris filling nearby roads.
Transportation and Infrastructure Disrupted
The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.1, disrupted transportation services, including the suspension of bullet trains at JR Hakata Station in Fukuoka. Images revealed fallen shelves and equipment scattered across offices in Kumamoto Prefecture. Additionally, an exterior wall of a store collapsed in Kumamoto City.
Widespread Damage in Kumamoto Prefecture
At least 12 buildings reported collapses, particularly in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture, where people remain trapped in four cases. Aerial footage by NHK showed a devastated commercial facility and mall. The structural damage extended to shrines and buildings catching fire. Officials recorded at least seven fires in the area.
Magnitude and Impact of the Quake
The earthquake, deemed a major event by the Japan Meteorological Agency, resulted in derailments and injuries. The quake had a 7.1 preliminary magnitude and a depth of 10 kilometers. The intensity was at the highest end of Japan’s seismic scale. A regional tsunami warning affected the Ariake and Yatsushiro Seas, though it was later lifted.
Japan’s High Earthquake Vulnerability
Japan’s position on the “Ring of Fire” leads to frequent seismic activity. This area has numerous tectonic plates, causing earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Approximately 20% of global earthquakes that measure 6.0 or higher occur in Japan. Since 2011’s catastrophic Fukushima incident, Japan has improved warning systems and evacuation procedures to better respond to such natural disasters.
