Widespread Damage Reported After Earthquake
Southern Japan faced the aftermath of a strong earthquake today. Local fire officials report multiple people are trapped in the AEON Mall, which suffered partial destruction. Video footage from state broadcaster NHK shows numerous fire trucks in the facility’s parking lot. An explosion was heard on the mall’s second floor. The collapse resulted in notable debris around the area.
Immediate Impact of the Earthquake
The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.1, disrupted bullet train services, leading to crowded stations such as JR Hakata in Fukuoka. Images display fallen shelves and damaged office equipment in Kumamoto Prefecture. A store’s exterior wall in Kumamoto City has collapsed.
Extensive Structural Damage
NHK reports at least 12 buildings have collapsed, with people trapped in four incidents. Yatsushiro City in Kumamoto Prefecture experienced most of these cases. Aerial footage by NHK shows significant structural damage at a commercial facility in the region. A shrine’s pillars have fallen, and fires broke out in several locations.
Tsunami Warning and Response
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for the Ariake and Yatsushiro Seas following the quake. The warning was later lifted. The earthquake, with a depth of 10 kilometers, was intense, derailing trains and causing numerous injuries.

Japan, located on the “Ring of Fire,” frequently experiences earthquakes. Nearly 20% of global earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or higher occur in Japan.
