Cape Canaveral, Florida—A spacecraft set to rescue an aging NASA telescope faces its own technical issues. The company Katalyst Space Technologies reported that its satellite, Link, is experiencing thruster problems, leading to an uncontrollable spin that disrupts communication.
This issue emerged over the past weekend, just three weeks after the robotic spacecraft, equipped with three arms, was launched into orbit. The startup company is working tirelessly to resolve Link’s problems to proceed with its mission to capture and boost the Swift telescope to a higher orbit. NASA’s Swift telescope, launched in 2004, is scheduled to crash back to Earth this fall unless it receives assistance. NASA has invested $30 million into this rapid rescue effort, prepared in less than a year.
Swift is descending more rapidly than anticipated due to recent solar activity. Immediate action is needed to allow Swift to continue its essential role in scanning the universe, focusing on significant cosmic explosions such as gamma-ray bursts and supernovae. Scientific operations are currently suspended until these matters are resolved.
Despite these challenges, both Katalyst and NASA remain optimistic. The company stated that all major subsystems of Link are functioning adequately. Katalyst expressed confidence in a statement saying, “The mission remains active and we continue to believe that with these changes, Link has a viable path to rendezvous with Swift.”
