Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has issued a challenge to the state’s Republican Senator Mitch McConnell, urging him to either demonstrate his ability to continue serving or step down. Beshear’s call follows McConnell’s extended hospital stay. According to McConnell’s office, the 84-year-old senator has not yet received medical clearance to leave the rehabilitation facility where he is undergoing physical therapy.
McConnell, who was hospitalized following a fall on June 14, missed a significant Kentucky political event and upcoming Senate votes. Beshear had initially pressed McConnell in early July to disclose more information about his health condition after weeks of silence. In a letter sent Tuesday, Beshear escalated his demands.
I am calling on you to directly and verbally address the people of Kentucky and provide proof of your capacity to serve, or resign.
Beshear also reached out to Senate Majority Leader John Thune, urging him to assess McConnell’s capacity if the senator does not showcase his ability to continue his service. Neither McConnell nor Thune’s offices have commented on Beshear’s letter.
McConnell has led Senate Republicans for almost two decades and has maintained privacy regarding his personal life. Since his hospitalization, major updates have been sparse, with significant announcements made on July 12 and July 27, each accompanied by a single photograph. The lack of regular updates has fueled public speculation concerning his condition.
Beshear highlighted the growing scrutiny over the health of aging elected officials, pointing to recent incidents such as the deaths of California Senator Dianne Feinstein and South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, as well as concerns about President Joe Biden’s decision not to pursue reelection due to health considerations.
All of this speculation and even this letter could have been avoided with a minimal amount of transparency.
