CBS News is undertaking a significant restructuring of its renowned program 60 Minutes ahead of its 59th season. Nick Bilton, the show’s newly appointed executive producer, disclosed several noteworthy additions recently.
Ross Douthat, a conservative columnist from the New York Times, is among the new recruits. At a staff briefing, Bilton praised Douthat’s ability to handle controversial subjects with empathy and nuance. He highlighted Douthat’s curiosity and commitment as valuable qualities that will enrich the program.
“He makes controversial topics approachable and renders characters and points of view with richness and compassion,” Bilton announced. “Ross will bring this big and ranging curiosity to our air.”
Douthat’s departure marks the end of a 17-year tenure at the New York Times. Kathleen Kingsbury, the Times Opinion editor, acknowledged Douthat’s contributions and expressed gratitude for his efforts in promoting diverse perspectives.
Another notable addition to 60 Minutes is CBS News veteran Norah O’Donnell, who has previously contributed exceptional segments including interviews with Pope Francis, President Trump, President Biden, and Mohammed bin Salman. O’Donnell’s extensive experience and reporting skills are expected to enhance the program.
The overhaul follows multiple high-profile departures within the company, including the firing of executive producer Tanya Simon and correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi, Cecilia Vega, and Scott Pelley. While these dismissals have stirred tensions within CBS News, several veteran correspondents such as Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker, and Jon Wertheim continue their association with the show. Anderson Cooper, however, has decided to step away from the program this year.
Moreover, Bilton announced new contributors to 60 Minutes, including journalist and documentary filmmaker Sebastian Junger and former Vice News correspondent Gianna Toboni, along with former Sky News presenter Trevor Phillips who joins as a senior global affairs correspondent.
CBS News executives, including Editor-in-chief Bari Weiss and President Tom Cibrowski, have expressed enthusiasm for the new team, encouraging everyone to welcome these colleagues.
