Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton has been fined and suspended from attending the team’s next five home games. This decision, confirmed by the WNBA to Fox News Digital, follows allegations that Keaton called two teenage fans “f—ing insane” during a game. These fans were present to support Sophie Cunningham and the Indiana Fever against the Storm.
Independent journalist Brandi Kruse recounted the incident, emphasizing that the behavior displayed was unacceptable. The remarks were allegedly directed at two girls dressed in XX-XY Athletics gear, a nod to Cunningham’s stance on preserving women’s sports. The confrontation between Keaton and the girls, which included another fan, was also captured on video.
I truly believe there is a space and love for EVERYBODY. Biological girls, boys, trans women, and trans men, everyone is welcome. You can disagree and still be kind. The incident was embarrassing,”wrote Cunningham in response.
In light of the incident, Storm majority owner Ginny Gilder issued a public apology. She reaffirmed the team’s commitment to ensuring all fans feel respected and welcome at games.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion, drawing comments from notable figures such as author J.K. Rowling. The night began with a rally for Cunningham’s recent public statements, attracting both supporters and a small group of counterprotesters in favor of transgender inclusion.
Kruse, who accompanied the girls, reported witnessing Storm players making dismissive gestures towards them. Meanwhile, the girls claimed Keaton approached them aggressively, which led to a complaint to arena security. Keaton was identified as part of the ownership group.
The girls, initially excited for the rare chance to see their favorite players, ended up deeply upset by the encounter. Despite online rumors, Kruse clarified that the girls voluntarily put down their supportive signs after feeling uncomfortable.
Storm head coach Sonia Raman later addressed the situation, ensuring the team’s ongoing dedication to providing a welcoming environment. The Indiana Fever distanced themselves, emphasizing they had no prior knowledge of the rally, focusing instead on their game and fans.
