Baby’s Unplanned Arrival at Fast-Food Parking Lot

A couple from Southern California experienced an unforeseen delivery when their daughter arrived not in a hospital, but at a Jack in the Box parking lot. Firefighters assisted in the delivery after a hasty drive to the hospital proved inadequate.

Michelle Cisneros and Darren Campbell welcomed their daughter, Valentina Isla Campbell, last Friday. They had pulled into the fast-food restaurant in Orange County and called 911 once they realized they wouldn’t reach the delivery room in time. The newborn arrived 15 days before the expected due date, which caught the family off guard.

I thought maybe they were Braxton Hicks contractions, Cisneros explained. But my contractions were five minutes apart and intensifying, so I decided to go to the labor and delivery to be cautious.

Despite the joyful event, the parents reflected on whether the situation could have been avoided. Cisneros had been evaluated and discharged twice from Hoag Hospital before giving birth. She spent an hour under supervision each time and was told her cervix showed no change. Nurses advised her to return if contractions were three minutes apart.

Cisneros shared, The nurse told us to come back if contractions were three minutes apart. We timed them downstairs, and they were.

Upon returning to the hospital, Cisneros was monitored again and discharged. They gave me morphine because of the pain, she recounted. Darren Campbell urged hospital staff not to send his wife home, emphasizing their concern over the three-minute contractions.

The couple then drove towards their home. About two miles away, they stopped in a Jack in the Box parking lot and called 911. Firefighters quickly arrived to help with the delivery.

Darren Campbell recalled, Michelle said we could make it, but then she said, ‘She’s coming,’ and I knew we needed help.

The arrival of firefighters provided relief. When I heard her cry, I felt just sheer relief, Campbell remembered.

Cisneros reflected on the experience, emphasizing the importance of trusting one’s instincts. Women should advocate for themselves; they know their bodies best, she stated. Campbell echoed this sentiment, urging others to trust their gut feelings.

The family spent a few days recovering before bringing their newborn home. While attempts to contact Hoag Hospital for comments were unresponded, a care package was reportedly offered by Jack in the Box.
