President Donald Trump is confronting Republican opposition to confirm Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. After a delayed confirmation hearing, Trump criticized Senators John Cornyn and Thom Tillis, who are blocking his lawyer’s path to becoming the top prosecutor.
Following the hearing’s postponement, Trump expressed his frustration on Truth Social. He targeted Cornyn, R-Texas, and Tillis, R-N.C., as key figures hampering Blanche’s confirmation. Trump even suggested withdrawing Blanche’s nomination until the senators are no longer in office.
“Todd Blanche is a STAR, and everyone knows it! He has the potential to go down as one of the Greatest Attorney Generals of All Time,” Trump stated. “However, John Cornyn, of Texas, and Thom Tillis, of North Carolina, are refusing to vote for this Great Nominee.”
Trump noted Cornyn and Tillis’ previous support for nominees like Merrick Garland as he threatened to withdraw Blanche temporarily. The President’s frustration stems from their demand for specific revisions to a settlement between the IRS and the Trump family.
Despite Trump’s backing of Ken Paxton to oppose Cornyn, and Tillis choosing retirement, Cornyn dismissed Trump’s threats. He insisted their concerns over the tax lawsuit settlement go beyond them and are shared by other senators.
Due to their resistance, Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley postponed Blanche’s hearing indefinitely. Negotiations continue but the requested modifications, such as eliminating a $2 billion fund and revising audit immunity, remain ungranted.
Even if Trump resubmits Blanche’s nomination, there is no certainty of Senate approval next year. The current composition poses challenges with more vulnerable Republican seats than those of the Democrats.
Trump may keep Blanche as acting attorney general indefinitely, similar to how former President Biden retained Julie Su as acting Labor Secretary during his term. This scenario underscores the ongoing tension and strategic maneuvering within the Republican Party.
