Senators Push for Fines on Pentagon Audit Failures

Sens. Bernie Sanders and Chuck Grassley have reintroduced a bipartisan bill that aims to impose financial penalties on the Pentagon for audit failures. This legislation, named the Audit the Pentagon Act, would hold the department accountable by withholding 2 percent of its budget if any part fails to pass a clean audit.

Sen. Sanders stated, “The Pentagon has been plagued by a massive amount of waste, fraud, and financial mismanagement for decades.” He criticized the continuous allocation of funds without accountability, especially during a time when the military budget is at its highest in history.

The reintroduced bill has gained support from several senators, including Ron Wyden, Chris Van Hollen, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, and others from both parties. The Pentagon has faced audit challenges, failing its eighth consecutive audit last year. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced plans for a clean audit by 2028.

Bipartisan pressure mounts on the Pentagon to manage its finances transparently. Recently, an amendment by Rep. Andy Biggs was adopted, which proposes a 0.5 percent budget cut for audit failures.
