Komolafe Remains at Northwestern
Amidst the bustling ballroom at Hilton Chicago, Caleb Komolafe, Northwestern’s standout running back, often faced a pressing question during the Big Ten football media days. Komolafe, who saw a breakout season in 2025 with 941 yards and 11 touchdowns over 190 carries, chose to stay at Northwestern despite his success in the transfer portal era.
Reflecting on his choice, Komolafe emphasized the strong bonds he formed with teammates and the coaching staff, led by Coach David Braun and position coach Aristotle Thompson. “The brotherhood and relationships I built were key,” Komolafe noted. Coach Braun’s leadership and Thompson’s guidance propelled Komolafe’s growth on the field.
The announcement of Chip Kelly joining as offensive coordinator further solidified his decision. “It was surreal hearing Chip Kelly was coming,” he expressed. Kelly, known for his college and NFL coaching expertise, presented new opportunities for Komolafe in Northwestern’s evolving offense.
Komolafe’s Performance and Growth
In 2024, Komolafe managed 139 yards in 10 games but seized the starting role in 2025 after Cam Porter’s ACL injury. He delivered four 100-yard games and averaged 5 yards per carry by the season’s end, benefiting from his newfound decisiveness in gameplay. “I learned to understand the game flow and let loose,” Komolafe reflected.
Coach Braun praised his consistency and discipline, underscoring Komolafe’s efforts beyond the field. His pre-practice routines, recovery methods, and playbook study all contributed to his aspirations for an All-Big Ten distinction.
Developing Further and Team Dynamics
Looking forward, Komolafe aims to enhance his skills in passing game protection, reading defense keys, and presnap analysis with Kelly’s guidance. “Getting tips from Kelly is invaluable,” Komolafe shared about his learning experience.
Beyond Komolafe, Braun sees potential in the running back group featuring Joseph Himon II and Gavin Sawchuk. Both add diverse strengths, with Himon contributing speed and Sawchuk adding versatility from his time at Florida State and Oklahoma.
Thompson instills a team-first ethos, promoting mutual support and belief in each player’s ability to excel.
Upcoming Season and Aspirations
Chip Kelly’s offensive coordination aims to revive Northwestern’s performance, previously ranking 96th in FBS with 346.1 yards and 23.4 points per game under quarterback Preston Stone. The team strengthened its roster with quarterback Aidan Chiles from Michigan State and Nicco Marchiol from West Virginia.
Despite not finalizing the starting QB position, Braun noted the development and competition in camp as pivotal to final decisions.
With Northwestern’s opener against South Dakota State on September 5 approaching, Braun’s ambitious motto “Big Ten championship, why not us?” sets the tone for the Wildcats. The addition of a new Ryan Field on October 2 accompanies aspirations for hosting College Football Playoff games.
Komolafe aligns with Braun’s vision, advocating for a 12-0 record and Big Ten championship pursuit, moving past the typical six-win goal.
“We’re often overlooked,” Komolafe stated, believing Northwestern’s talent and support can drive unexpected success within the league.
