In this complex scenario, the Abundance movement envisions a future of abundant, secure, and clean energy. However, it lacks a clear plan. The focus should move beyond simply increasing energy supply. Efficiency is key. Current energy practices waste vast amounts of resources. For instance, two-thirds of fossil fuel energy is lost before reaching users. Efficient renewables can achieve more with less.
Efficiency upgrades are often overlooked. Techniques such as using heat pumps and LED lights drastically reduce energy consumption. Electric vehicles, too, are far more energy-efficient than their gasoline counterparts. Electrification improves quality of life. It ensures clean air in homes and safer cooking methods. Electric vehicles offer quiet, clean transport.
Economically, renewable energy is outpacing fossil fuels. Utility-scale solar energy already costs less than oil. Charging electric vehicles is affordable across the U.S., comparable to paying under $2 per gallon of gasoline. These changes support economic growth while cutting consumption.
Energy infrastructure is becoming more localized and efficient. Rooftop solar power remains underutilized in the U.S., despite its increased adoption overseas. Developing local microgrids boosts reliability. Enhancing existing infrastructure avoids environmental impacts of new projects.
Innovative solutions such as distributing electric batteries and virtual power plants offer flexibility. These technologies allow for efficient energy use and consumer empowerment. They facilitate further adoption of renewables.
Significant energy savings are achievable. Global use of electric vehicles is already reducing oil dependence.
Progress hinges on removing existing barriers. This involves improving information access and reforming policies. These will enable renewable deployment and enhance energy efficiency.
