In August 2023, Judith Zilversmit, a journalist based in Amsterdam, faced an unexpected revelation through Instagram. A message from an unknown woman promised to share crucial information about Zilversmit’s family. The woman expressed her anxiety about sharing something sensitive, noting that she discovered dark aspects of her grandmother’s past.
The message, originating from Ingeborg Boelen, a Belgian near the Dutch border, included details from a criminal file about her grandmother’s collaboration with Nazis during World War II. Boelen disclosed that her grandmother had betrayed Zilversmit’s father and other family members. She offered to provide more details if Zilversmit was interested.
Zilversmit, aged 49, recalled being stunned and initially dismissing the message. She felt unsure about how to handle this contact about her family’s historical betrayal. In an interview, she described her reaction, saying, “My first reaction was, ‘What am I supposed to do with this?’”
Despite the shock, Zilversmit’s curiosity about her family’s history was piqued. Her father, Hans, who passed away in 2014, had recounted their escape to Belgium during Germany’s invasion of Holland in 1940. The revelation added a new dimension to her understanding of her family’s Holocaust experiences.
