President Donald Trump continued his criticism of Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas, over a delay in confirming his personal lawyer, Todd Blanche, as the next attorney general. This follows Trump’s previous threat to withdraw Blanche’s nomination. Trump specifically targeted Cornyn after endorsing Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton during their primary, which Cornyn supported despite prior backing of the anti-weaponization fund.
Trump alleged that Cornyn initially supported the fund aimed at protecting American citizens, until Trump backed Cornyn’s opponent in Texas. Trump’s statement on Truth Social emphasized that Cornyn changed his stance following the endorsement.
As of now, Cornyn’s office has not responded to Trump’s remarks. Alongside Senator Thom Tillis, R-N.C., Cornyn is urging the Department of Justice to revise Blanche’s proposed changes related to Trump’s IRS settlement, which includes audit immunity. Both senators are seeking explicit agreements from the DOJ and administration over these adjustments.
Cornyn expressed frustration over higher-level opposition within the White House, complicating Blanche’s confirmation process. He noted that without this interference, an agreement might have been possible.
The anti-weaponization fund, criticized by both parties for potentially supporting Capitol rioters, remains a sticking point. Trump argues the fund is necessary to compensating those he views as victims of government overreach, a sentiment he claims resonated with his electoral supporters.
Meetings between Cornyn, Tillis, and Blanche continued amid Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley’s decision to delay Blanche’s confirmation hearing, initially set for Thursday. Trump threatened to withdraw the nomination if the stalemate persists, suggesting he may wait until Cornyn and Tillis are no longer in office. However, the nominee’s future remains uncertain, as other Republicans, including Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, and John Curtis, R-Utah, remain undecided on supporting Blanche.
