Climate Change’s Role in Recent Wildfires

Extreme fire weather devastated parts of Spain and France recently, a consequence of human-caused climate change. Two new studies confirm this link. The World Weather Attribution team conducted rapid analysis amid active fires, revealing climate change made Spain’s recent fire conditions 20 times more likely and doubled the risk in France.

Increased Fire Conditions

In the past 26 years, warming has tripled severe fire condition odds in Spain, with France seeing a 40% rise. Another study, released simultaneously but prepared before these fires, highlighted the number of days with extreme fire-prone weather in Southern Europe has more than doubled recently.

The studies assessed weather patterns contributing to fire conditions, examining factors like air temperature, drought, humidity, and wind.

“The change in fire weather conditions in Spain is exceptionally pronounced,” said Friederike Otto, an Imperial College of London climate scientist.

Spain’s summer was record-hot following a wet January, enabling plant growth. Subsequent drought placed vegetation at risk. Land abandonment further exacerbated conditions, while unmanaged plants dried out. France’s Bordeaux region, thick with pine groves susceptible to fire, faced similar challenges.

Scientific Methodology

While the attribution study by World Weather Attribution was rapid and lacked peer review, it adhered to scientific standards and often sees its findings published later in peer-reviewed journals. The analysis compared current fire weather severity against historical data, assessing influences if Earth were 2.5 degrees cooler, reflecting the warming since pre-industrial times.

“Fires ignite more easily and spread more explosively under extreme heat and drought,” noted Syracuse University fire scientist Jacob Bendix.

Significant Increase in Fire Weather Days

According to a study in Scientific Reports, Southern Europe previously faced about 10 extreme fire days annually. That figure has risen to 25 per year, and their intensity grew 50% compared to 1981-2010.

Though effective fire suppression and management saw Southern Europe reduce fires and burned area from the 1980s to 2018, climate change swiftly negated these improvements. The study emphasizes the limitation of resources against extreme weather conditions.

“When the weather is so extreme, resources or money alone cannot halt fire propagation,” stated Raúl Cordero of the University of Groningen.

Urgency for Action

University of California Merced’s fire scientist John Abatzaglou emphasized climate change’s current impact, noting it’s not a distant threat but an immediate issue.

Preventing worsening fire conditions requires a shift away from burning fossil fuels to prevent further temperature rise. Adapting to continually increasing fire weather becomes increasingly difficult, Otto warns.
