William Shatner, known for his iconic roles on television and in film, recently shared a harrowing health experience that almost went unnoticed. At 95 years old, Shatner faced a serious health threat when a doctor initially dismissed a lump on his body.
During an appearance on “CBS Mornings,” Shatner recounted how the first doctor he consulted believed the lump to be related to a salivary gland, suggesting it simply required massage. However, seeking a second opinion from a doctor friend was crucial. This friend urged him to take immediate action, stating the need for removal.
Upon further medical evaluation, Shatner received a life-changing diagnosis: stage 4 malignant melanoma. The cancer had already spread substantially, affecting both his brain and lungs. “Little points of light in my brain and lung,” Shatner described, emphasizing the severity of his condition. An oncologist swiftly recommended surgery, followed by a two-year immunotherapy regimen.
During this time, Shatner’s daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, confronted her own health crisis. Nearly a year before her father’s diagnosis, Gretsch had discovered a lump in her breast. Despite a previous mammogram showing no issues, her intuition pushed her to seek further examination. This decision revealed HER2-positive breast cancer with lymph node involvement in her chest.
In a heartfelt joint interview with her father, Gretsch expressed her struggle with the aggressive nature of her cancer, which had spread beyond the breast. Her treatment involved rigorous protocols, including chemotherapy sessions, radiation therapy, a double mastectomy, and a year of immunotherapy.
Both father and daughter have now triumphed over their battles. By the end of 2024, doctors declared them cancer-free. For Gretsch, the emotional milestone of informing her father about her recovery resonated deeply, marking one of few times she had seen him cry.
Despite these challenges, Shatner remains industrious. The actor, who has the distinction of being the oldest person to fly to space aboard a Blue Origin rocket, continues to work on projects including new books, a podcast, and music ventures.
