Will Lawrence, a candidate for the Michigan House and a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), recently called for a national moratorium on data centers during an interview with Fox News Digital. He emphasized the need for a federal halt on new AI data centers to enable a national discussion on their development. Lawrence expressed concerns about the AI benefiting only a select few rather than society at large.
Speaking at a campaign event in South Lansing, Michigan, Lawrence stated his support for the federal moratorium. He argued that current data center construction practices compromise democratic principles. He pointed out that tech billionaires often promise benefits like stable energy costs to small towns, which might not always be the case.
Lawrence also criticized President Donald Trump and called for comprehensive campaign finance reform. He supports publicly funded elections to reduce the influence of money in politics. He criticized the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission, which allowed political contributions to be treated as free speech. Lawrence believes a constitutional amendment is necessary to overturn this decision.
At a rally in Lansing, Lawrence avoided discussing certain DSA policies, focusing instead on AI data centers, international conflicts, and healthcare. Backed by figures like Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, he is competing in the Democratic primary for Michigan’s 7th district against several candidates, including former Ambassador Bridget Brink.
