European Leaders Under Scrutiny
Sánchez criticized European leaders, particularly Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, for their handling of the crisis. Italy resumed border controls, suspending Schengen free travel between the countries. Sánchez described this move as divisive and contrary to European law and solidarity principles. He highlighted Spain’s quick response in returning around 50,000 to 60,000 migrants to Morocco.
Sánchez stated, “Such an attitude — driven by prejudice, fake news, ignorance, or political interest — is not only contrary to European law, humanitarian law, and the principles of solidarity that bind us together.”
Migrant Figures and EU Response
Authorities reported that tens of thousands of migrants attempted illegal entry into Ceuta. In response, Sánchez called for a meeting with the EU’s 27 interior ministers to address the crisis. Ireland, currently holding the presidency of the European Council, supported convening a Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting.
The surge also prompted a response from Italy’s Prime Minister Meloni. She emphasized a need for stronger EU borders and action against illegal immigration.
Return of Migrants
Most migrants reportedly returned to Morocco, as stated by Ursula von der Leyen of the European Commission. Neither mainland Spain nor other parts of the EU received any additional migrants.
Human Impact and Future Measures
Tragically, 67 individuals lost their lives in the chaos. Spain plans to install a sea barrier to prevent future mass migrations.
