A training camp collision posed a brief threat to Cyrus Allen’s promising start with the Kansas City Chiefs. Fortunately, the rookie wide receiver seems to have avoided a major setback. Initial assessments indicated Allen sustained only a shin bruise, with no tear or fracture, according to ESPN sources.
Allen was not the only Chiefs wide receiver to face an injury scare during Saturday’s camp. Xavier Worthy also experienced trouble during an 11-on-11 session after catching a deep pass near the end zone. He landed on his shoulder, raising concerns. Worthy had earlier shoulder issues in his NFL career, injuring his right shoulder last season in a collision with tight end Travis Kelce. He underwent offseason surgery to address the problem.
Allen’s incident occurred on Saturday during a special teams drill. While practicing pooch punts, Allen and defensive back Kaiir Elam, both positioned as gunners, collided near the goal line while chasing the ball. Elam managed to walk off, but Allen needed assistance to leave the field. Observers noted Allen shaking his head before covering his face with his jersey.
Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub acknowledged Allen’s strong progression before the incident. “I hate to see someone get injured, especially during a special teams drill,” Toub remarked. “He’s been performing well on offense and contributing to special teams as a gunner and returner, putting himself in a strong position.” Toub elaborated on the role rookies play in special teams until they establish themselves in offense or defense.
The Chiefs drafted Allen in April’s fifth round, and he quickly made an impact, becoming a favored target for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. During 11-on-11 sessions, Allen led the team’s wide receivers in receptions, showcasing his potential to contribute significantly.
