Cuban Influence Raises Security Concerns, Says Rubio

Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed worries about Cuba’s capacity to infiltrate and manipulate key U.S. institutions. He elaborated on a perceived threat from a Cuban spy network undermining American interests.

“A failed state 90 miles from our shores that happens to be aligned with adversaries to the United States is a national security threat to our country,” Rubio stated on “My View with Lara Trump.” His comments come after a 100-page State Department report highlighted Cuba’s influence in the U.S., associating the country with Antifa and radical activism while branding it the “capital of 21st-century communism.”

Cuba built covert networks in America through spies, activists, and universities, according to the State Department.

Rubio linked protests against ICE and in support of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro to Cuban-sponsored networks aimed at influencing U.S. policymakers.

“They actually are an influence and espionage superpower,” Rubio remarked. “Cuba is the only country that consistently implants and embeds spies in our system without compensating them financially.” He cited a U.S. ambassador who was convicted as a spy for Cuba, penetrating top levels of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). Former U.S. ambassador and national security official Manuel Rocha confessed to acting as a secret agent for Cuba and received a 15-year prison sentence.

Rubio highlighted Ana Belén Montes, a DIA analyst known for passing secrets to Cuba, as part of a critical security breach in U.S. history.

Rubio also stated that networks of Cuban-hired activists organize protests across the U.S. to exert pressure on lawmakers. He argued that protests supporting Hamas, opposing ICE, and endorsing Maduro are connected to this orchestrated network.

“There’s nothing organic about it. It is funded and organized with Cuba as a significant part,” Rubio continued.

U.S. bases and ICE facilities have been targeted in a Cuban-linked activist mobilization plan.

Rubio accused Cuba of orchestrating influence campaigns across Latin America, supporting communist insurgencies over recent decades.

Critics of the State Department’s report view it as a scare tactic potentially justifying U.S. military intervention in Cuba. Rubio countered that some in American academia and media sympathize with Cuba’s regime due to anti-American sentiments and ideological similarities.

“We cannot ignore this threat,” he cautioned.
