British Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressed strong doubts about FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s capability to continue leading the global soccer organization. The comments followed the scrapping of a controversial proposal to sell World Cup stakes to private investors. Burnham stated, “I do not believe that he is the right man to lead football forward on the world stage.” He found the proposed plan offensive to the football community worldwide. Burnham emphasized that the issue could not simply be forgotten.
On the preceding Saturday, UEFA, European soccer’s governing body, announced its loss of confidence in FIFA’s leadership. This declaration could potentially challenge Infantino’s presidency. Additionally, CONCACAF criticized FIFA leadership, accusing it of neglecting to prioritize football. Infantino’s backdown came after 55 UEFA member nations decided to boycott the World Cup and other FIFA events. Both CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation expressed opposition to Infantino’s plans.
Despite Infantino’s retraction of the proposal, UEFA committed to collaborating with other confederations to ensure such plans don’t resurface. They stated, “No option should be off the table.” While Infantino received some support from associations like World Cup 2022 host Qatar, Burnham’s comments highlighted the widespread discontent caused by his scheme.
The next FIFA presidential election is scheduled for March in Rabat, Morocco, with a candidate entry deadline set for November 18, four months prior to the election. This timeline is crucial as the election approaches amid growing criticism of FIFA’s leadership.
