The Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies made significant trades on Monday before the baseball trade deadline. The Red Sox acquired three-time All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman, while the Phillies picked up three-time batting champion Luis Arraez. These moves highlighted a day filled with trades, as teams reshuffled rosters before the 6 p.m. EDT deadline.
In addition to these headline-grabbing trades, other teams were also active. The Houston Astros obtained veteran outfielder Daulton Varsho from Toronto in exchange for right-hander Spencer Arrighetti. Similarly, the Chicago Cubs added pitcher Clay Holmes from the New York Mets.
Red Sox Strengthen Catching Core
Adley Rutschman, the 2019 No. 1 overall pick, joins the Boston Red Sox after five exceptional seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. Despite starting the season slowly, the Red Sox have boosted their playoff aspirations with a notable 15-game winning streak in July. The 28-year-old Rutschman, who has a .762 OPS this season, also comes with injuries including wrist inflammation and a concussion. He is under team control through 2027.
In the deal, the Red Sox also received catcher Jake Rogers and cash considerations. The Orioles gained catcher Carlos Narváez, minor league pitchers Anthony Eyanson and Kyson Witherspoon, outfielder Enddy Azocar, and future considerations. Eyanson is recognized as a top pitching prospect. Later, the Red Sox acquired left-hander Erik Miller and outfielder Carlos Gutierrez in exchange for infielder Marcelo Mayer.
Phillies Acquire Elite Contact Hitter
With Luis Arraez, the Phillies have a premier contact hitter from the San Francisco Giants. Arraez is delivering a .324 batting average in a rebound season and is now positioned to enhance RBI opportunities for Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber.
In this trade, the Phillies received reliever Caleb Kilian. Additionally, they acquired left-handed reliever Brooks Raley from the Mets.
Padres Enhance Pitching Depth
The San Diego Padres made several trades to strengthen their pitching lineup. They obtained former Cy Young winner Robbie Ray from the San Francisco Giants and added right-hander Casey Mize from the Detroit Tigers.
Ray has a 10-6 record with a 3.08 ERA, while Mize holds a 4-6 record with a 2.70 ERA. The Padres continue to eye a playoff spot following their recent performance surge.
Dodgers Continue to Bolster Roster
Already strong in acquisitions, the Los Angeles Dodgers added 2025 All-Star Kris Bubic from the Kansas City Royals.
