The House Ethics Committee announced on Tuesday that it has initiated an investigation into domestic abuse allegations against Republican Representative Max Miller. The Ohio congressman is under increasing scrutiny from former President Donald Trump and criticisms from his ex-father-in-law, Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno.
Miller, who served as a senior adviser to Trump during his first presidency, has until Wednesday to decide if he will remain in the race for reelection. Republicans are concerned that the allegations could jeopardize their efforts to retain a House majority in the midterm elections.
According to a statement by the ethics committee, they are examining whether Miller has been involved in domestic violence, abuse, or illegal drug use. Earlier, Miller requested an investigation into allegations made by his ex-wife, Emily Moreno. The origin of the committee’s investigation remains unclear.
Trump reportedly advised Miller in a private conversation that his candidacy “doesn’t look good,” according to a source familiar with the discussion. Axios first reported this exchange, and Miller later confirmed in a CNN interview that he would not withdraw from the race despite Trump’s warnings.
“Maxie, it’s going to be a tough race. And he said, I don’t know if you’re going to be able to, you know, pull this one out,”
Miller said, relaying Trump’s comments. He added, “I will never, ever, ever let my baby girl see her dad walk away as a quitter. I will continue to finish this.”
Miller, endorsed by Trump in May, is facing legal challenges from his ex-wife, who is Senator Moreno’s daughter, and an ex-girlfriend. On Tuesday, Moreno broke his silence, citing the severe emotional toll on his daughter and family.
“This has been brutal beyond comprehension,” Moreno told reporters, criticizing Miller’s suitability for public office. When asked about political consequences, Moreno stated he does not care about the political implications, expressing concern for his family, especially his granddaughter.
Miller and his ex-wife share custody of their 2-year-old daughter. Moreno shared that he visited a suburban Cleveland police station, where Miller was with their daughter. Earlier, Miller indicated his intent to remain in the race, defending himself in a video on X with documents from his divorce and custody disputes.
Reacting to the video, Senator Moreno urged Miller to resign from public office. Trump refrained from publicly suggesting that Miller leave the race, acknowledging the accusations as “allegations.” “I know Max. He’s a good person. I mean, I always thought he was a very good person. And I’m going to let the families figure that out,” Trump commented to reporters in the Oval Office.
