Bronze Star recipient Michael Bouchard, a congressional candidate from the Republican Party, emerged victorious in a GOP primary to represent Michigan’s 10th Congressional District. This victory came after he secured an endorsement from former President Donald Trump.
Republicans are optimistic that Bouchard’s distinguished credentials and his commitment to redirect the nation’s course will help maintain their narrow majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. Nonetheless, the district remains a challenging battleground.
Democrats are eyeing more GOP-held House seats following recent socialist victories in left-wing primaries.
Incumbent Representative John James, a Republican from Michigan, last secured reelection in 2024, defeating Democratic contender Carl Marlinga, a judge and ex-prosecutor, with 51.1% to 45.0% of the votes. In the preceding cycle, James narrowly edged out Marlinga by a margin of 48.8% to 48.3% in 2022.
James, capitalizing on his incumbency, announced his decision to vacate the congressional seat in favor of a gubernatorial campaign, emphasizing the move as a strategy to ensure Michigan’s future prosperity. He stated, “My family, like countless others, came to our great state for the better opportunities our manufacturing and automotive industries offered and to live the American dream.”
Bouchard underscores his military experience, having served in the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. His deployment included missions to Iraq and the U.S. southern border. Similar to James, Bouchard was awarded the Bronze Star for participation in joint operations against ISIS. Despite being a political newcomer, Bouchard positions himself as a proponent of moving the country in a new direction from the previous administration.
In a campaign video, Republican gubernatorial candidate John James shared his thoughts on Trump’s plans to enhance the blue-collar industry by swiftly integrating veterans. Bouchard, reflecting on his border service under Trump, stated, “Under President Trump, I led missions on the southern border; back then we got the job done. But on day one, Joe Biden shut us all down; he opened the border.” He further elaborated on the implications by saying, “Human trafficking, drug smuggling, known terrorists walked right in. The Army taught me that weak leadership has consequences and I’m ready to lead America back.”
On his campaign platform, Bouchard emphasizes promoting American manufacturing, completing the southern border wall, and enhancing parental involvement in educational systems.
Earlier this year, Trump expressed his support for Bouchard through Truth Social, stating, “A third-generation Michigander, brave U.S. Army veteran and Bronze Star recipient Mike has served his state and nation with distinction and will bring that same fighting spirit to the U.S. Congress.” Trump further added, “Mike Bouchard has my complete and total endorsement to be the next representative from Michigan’s 10th congressional district.”
Democratic primaries face tension as establishment favorites dismiss rivals as ‘celebrity candidates’
Bouchard has gained endorsements from notable congressional figures, including U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson from Louisiana, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise also from Louisiana, Majority Whip Tom Emmer from Minnesota, and GOP Conference Chair Lisa McClain from Michigan.
Having won the Republican primary, Bouchard will advance to the general election on November 3.
