Rep. Shri Thanedar has lost his Democratic primary in Michigan to state Rep. Donavan McKinney, as projected by NBC News. This result represents a triumph for the party’s progressive wing. McKinney, aged 34, garnered support from prominent progressives across the state and nationally, strengthening the faction challenging the Democratic establishment.
The Detroit-area seat’s unique dynamics make McKinney’s win more complex than previous progressive victories in this election cycle. McKinney, a democratic socialist, campaigns on a progressive agenda. His platform includes ‘Medicare for All,’ restricting military aid to Israel, and advocating for significant investments in clean energy and housing sectors.
Thanedar narrowly secured the seat in 2022 by self-funding his campaign but has faced scrutiny since. Initially running as a progressive, he parted ways with the Democratic Socialists of America in 2023, amidst differing accounts between him and the local chapter. He has since rebranded, focusing on support for Israel. Thanedar faced criticism from Democrats for his move to impeach Trump without party approval, though he later received endorsements from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and top House Democrats.
Thanedar’s campaign finances have drawn attention. His campaign reported losing over $2 million connected to cryptocurrency investments, a rare use of campaign funds. Additionally, he spent hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars on television ads from his office resembling campaign ads.
McKinney announced his congressional bid about 16 months before the primary, emphasizing his story of overcoming poverty and being the first in his family to attend college. He highlights his legislative work to demonstrate potential effectiveness in Congress. Thanedar’s personal challenges, combined with broader Democratic voter dissatisfaction and a unified progressive campaign in Michigan, contributed to McKinney’s success.
McKinney received backing from Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, alongside progressives like Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan. Groups such as Justice Democrats and Leaders We Deserve endorsed McKinney, aligning him with a broader group of challengers confronting incumbents nationwide this year.
