In Columbia, South Carolina, a federal judge dismissed Alex Murdaugh’s lawsuit seeking $600,000 in legal fees. The lawsuit targeted Becky Hill, a former court clerk whose actions led to Murdaugh’s murder convictions being overturned on appeal.
Murdaugh argued Hill violated his right to a fair trial in the case concerning the deaths of his wife and son. Although a jury initially found Murdaugh guilty, the state Supreme Court overturned the convictions earlier this year. The court cited Hill’s comments to jurors, which suggested Murdaugh’s guilt and undermined the credibility of his defense testimony.
“Plaintiff’s claim contains a fatal flaw — the lack of a causal connection between the funds he expended for his defense in the first trial and Defendant’s misconduct. Defendant had no role in the initiation of criminal charges against Plaintiff.”
Judge Richard Gergel stated that Murdaugh’s legal reasoning was flawed because the expenses would have been necessary regardless. Murdaugh filed a notice to appeal the decision shortly after.
Murdaugh claimed in court documents that he spent $600,000 from a retirement account to cover his defense in the first trial. He anticipates needing additional funds for his retrial next year. This case has gained significant public attention, with a streaming miniseries, bestselling books, and numerous podcasts covering the proceedings.
Despite the overturned murder convictions, Murdaugh remains incarcerated. He pleaded guilty to embezzling approximately $12 million from clients and is serving overlapping federal and state sentences for financial crimes, totaling 67 years.
Investigators allege Murdaugh’s opioid addiction and complex financial schemes were unraveling. They suggest he killed his wife and son to distract investigators and buy time to resolve his problems. His retrial on murder charges is scheduled for April.
