On Wednesday, German authorities discovered a drone equipped with explosives at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The drone was sighted shortly before midnight on Tuesday, prompting the closure of both runways at the major freight hub. Flights, including a passenger plane, were redirected. An anti-explosives robot was dispatched to examine an object near the south runway, where the detonator was ultimately removed from the device.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt addressed reporters at the airport, emphasizing the severity of the situation. He interrupted his vacation to visit the scene, expressing concern over this ‘new threat scenario.’ Dobrindt mentioned that while drone threats in a hybrid context have occurred before, a drone armed with explosives at an airport introduces a new element of danger.

Armin Schuster, the regional interior minister of Saxony state, reported that officials are also searching for parts of a potential second drone. An apparent second flying object reportedly collided with a freight airplane, leading it to abort landing due to the closed runway. This aircraft later landed in Hannover, 200 kilometers northwest, where slight damage was found.
The north runway at Leipzig/Halle was operational again after two hours. Scheduled maintenance kept the south runway closed on Wednesday. Authorities assured there was no danger to passengers or airport staff, and daytime operations continued smoothly. Images from the site depicted police technicians working with an explosives-disposal robot near Ukrainian planes. The airport serves as a strategic cargo hub, hosting Ukrainian Antonov transport aircraft.
In 2024, the airport faced an incident involving an incendiary device at a logistics center. The device caused fire in a freight container amid suspicions of Russian intelligence involvement. Western officials claim Russia and affiliates have perpetrated numerous attacks across Europe since Ukraine’s invasion over four years ago.
