Tom Smith, a Michigan Republican, has reentered the race for Michigan’s 8th Congressional District. Despite suspending his campaign and endorsing a rival, Smith won the primary and is now determined to challenge Democratic Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet.
Smith reappeared at a GOP unity brunch in Macomb County. He announced his intention to win the congressional seat and called for support from Republican activists to unseat Rivet. Although Smith did not respond to Fox News Digital’s inquiries about picking up his campaign, his commitment was clear.

Smith’s victory in the primary came despite previously backing Al Lemmo, another contender who placed third in the GOP primary. Smith was the leading candidate, surpassing Amir Hassan, who was supported by Donald Trump.
Following his defeat, Hassan expressed no resentment. In a video message from his car, he acknowledged the challenging race without making excuses. He conveyed his intent to return stronger in the future.
Meanwhile, Smith conveyed to CNN his sense of honor in being selected to challenge Democrats in the upcoming general election. He voiced his goal of expanding the Republican majority in the House and advancing policies that align with Trump’s America First agenda to reduce costs for families and restore affordability in America.
Smith’s renewed campaign seeks to unify and energize supporters as he takes on the Democratic incumbent in a key battleground district.
