New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani repeatedly avoided answering questions about a reported plan to initiate a public campaign for tax hikes on wealthy New Yorkers and corporations. This campaign is expected to start in the fall.
Reports suggest Mamdani aims to build public support after Labor Day for these proposals, which were previously rejected by Governor Kathy Hochul in early 2026. The efforts come before the New York Legislature reconvenes in January 2027 and ahead of Hochul’s re-election campaign.
During an interview with Fox 5 New York, Mamdani was asked about the potential campaign but did not directly answer, noting instead that discussions would only occur after the November election.
“The governor and I are in constant communication and, frankly, I appreciate her partnership… we had more than 5,000 New Yorkers come forward to apply for these 2,000 free child care seats,” he said.
Mamdani shifted the conversation to the opening of 2,000 free child care seats, emphasizing policy achievements instead of directly addressing the campaign.
When asked if the Democratic Socialists of America would join the campaign, Mamdani again focused on current goals, like ensuring safety during a heat wave and preparing for the school year.
There were previous efforts by Mamdani to introduce a tax increase to close the city’s budget gap. This move was projected to generate about $3 billion annually by raising taxes on those earning over $1 million and increasing corporate tax rates. However, Hochul collaborated with Mamdani on New York’s first pied-à-terre tax which is estimated to bring in about $500 million each year.
Mamdani mentioned his executive budget, which addressed a $12 billion budget gap through savings, new investments, and tax revenues including the pied-à-terre tax.
