A traffic stop in Eustis, Florida, erupted into violence when a suspect sped off, dragging officers along the way. The incident unfolded over the weekend and left officers injured.
Eustis Police reported that during a traffic stop in the early hours of Saturday, 28-year-old Shakoi Donovan drove off with one officer trapped inside his car. Another officer was dragged approximately 10 to 15 feet. Body camera footage captured the chaotic scene.
The officers initially stopped Donovan on suspicion of driving under the influence. They spotted his silver Infiniti swerving over a yellow line. Despite repeated requests to exit the vehicle, Donovan remained inside. Officers then attempted to physically remove him from the car.
In a startling moment captured on bodycam video, Donovan accelerated the vehicle with an officer still inside. Police reported that the officer was pinned between Donovan and the steering wheel during the escape.
The second officer, dragged by the vehicle, tumbled across the asphalt of S. Eustis Street, sustaining injuries that required medical attention.
Court records reveal Donovan’s previous run-ins with the law, including charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in May, and burglary and battery in 2022.
Faced with several charges, including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and aggravated battery, Donovan remained in custody. He was due to appear in court on August 24.
