Injuries continue to impact the Chicago White Sox’s catching lineup. Newly acquired catcher Joey Bart has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a fifth metacarpal fracture in his left hand, putting him out for over a month, according to general manager Chris Getz. The team has recalled catcher Edgar Quero from Triple-A Charlotte to fill the gap. These changes were part of four roster updates announced before the opening game against the Cleveland Guardians at Rate Field.
The Sox have also placed left-hander Chris Murphy on the 15-day injured list with a left flexor strain, and called up right-hander David Sandlin from Charlotte. Bart sustained his injury after being struck by a pitch in the seventh inning of Thursday’s 12-11 defeat to the Boston Red Sox, which took 13 innings to complete at Fenway Park in Boston.
Sox manager Will Venable expressed disappointment, stating, “Really disappointing… For that to happen is really disappointing. And also feel for him. He’s so excited to be here and certainly excited to be in the middle of a race and meaningful games down the stretch. And had a really good, positive first impression here with him.”
Thursday marked Bart’s third game since joining the team from the Atlanta Braves. “We’re going to miss Joey,” Getz remarked, acknowledging the setback. “But we’ve got to move on and find solutions. We’ve got Edgar Quero back here today, and we hope that he can step up. And we’ll continue to work through that position.”
The catching position has been unstable throughout the season, chiefly due to injuries. Kyle Teel has only been able to participate in 19 games because of various ailments, including his current left ankle sprain.
Quero contributed with a walk-off RBI single that clinched a victory for the White Sox against the Yankees on July 29, 2026, at Rate Field. However, he faces challenges, shown by recent statistics of .194/.257/.235 over 61 games, including one double, two home runs, and 16 RBIs.
Quero reflected on his recent experiences, saying, “Everybody knows it’s been a tough year for me at the beginning… The last time I went up… I was feeling pretty good. I’m feeling pretty good right now, too and I’m ready to go.”
This marks Quero’s third appointment with the team this season. White Sox manager Will Venable plans to alternate Quero and Drew Romo based on daily assessments and matchups.
Much like Quero, Sandlin experiences his third term with the team this season and holds a record of 2-1 with a 6.05 ERA from four appearances. General Manager Chris Getz expressed the need for multiple pitchers to manage the innings. “We brought up Sandlin… It’s comforting to know that we have a fully loaded Sandlin.”
With September approaching, uncertainties remain about the pitching rotation and bullpen, prompting reliance on Triple-A players and creative solutions.
