Ukrainian and Russian hostilities have resulted in significant casualties and damages in both countries. Four fatalities have been reported, including a child, following Russian attacks on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, and its surrounding region. This information comes from local officials as Ukraine continues retaliatory strikes on Russian oil refineries.
Residents of Kyiv endure relentless drone and missile attacks. Ukraine’s air defense systems are increasingly overwhelmed, struggling to counter the ongoing invasion by Moscow that has lasted over four years. In turn, Ukraine’s consistent strikes on Russia’s oil facilities are causing fuel shortages and unrest among the Russian populace.
Tragedy Strikes Kyiv Region
A tragic incident occurred in the Brovary district of Kyiv, where two grandparents and their 3-year-old grandson lost their lives. Early on a Saturday, Russian drones destroyed their home. Local authorities reported that three other family members and a helpful neighbor were hospitalized. The attack left their home in ruins and damaged nearby structures and vehicles.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed that another individual died in a missile attack targeting civilian infrastructure in Kyiv. Ukraine’s air force claimed to have intercepted 135 out of 151 drones launched by Russia overnight. The assault included ballistic and guided missiles.
Continuous Russian Strikes
Despite Russia’s claims of targeting military installations only, civilian areas in Ukraine repeatedly face attacks. Russia takes advantage of Ukraine’s severe shortage of interceptors for U.S.-supplied Patriot defense systems, the only weapon capable of countering ballistic missiles. Zelenskyy has appealed for more munitions, particularly from the U.S., and has expressed a desire to either manufacture them domestically or gain permission to use Starlink communication systems to target Russian missile launchers.
In response to recent offensives, Zelenskyy urged for more sanctions to halt the production of ballistic missiles, as well as requesting anti-ballistic and interceptor missile capabilities. Ukrainian defenses reportedly downed about 5,300 drones and missiles last month, which is nearly 60% of the nearly 9,000 projectiles fired by Russia during the same period.
Ukraine’s Strikes on Russian Oil Facilities
In Russia’s Krasnodar region, six individuals sustained injuries due to a fire at the Ilsky oil refinery, ignited by falling drone debris. Ukrainian forces targeted both the Krasnodar and Syzran refineries in Samara, over 800 kilometers from the border.
Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, the governor of Samara, confirmed drone strikes on an industrial enterprise without specifying the refinery. Ukrainian long-range drone and missile attacks frequently target Russian oil facilities, leading to a fuel crisis that embarrasses the Kremlin.
Zelenskyy’s Diplomatic Visit to Serbia
Amidst the conflict, Zelenskyy embarked on an official visit to Serbia. This trip marks his first to Serbia, one of Russia-friendly countries in Europe. Zelenskyy planned to meet Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Prime Minister Djuro Macut.
The discussions aimed to enhance economic ties between the two nations, engage in dialogue on relations with the European Union, and explore practical cooperative opportunities to benefit their peoples, along with addressing security concerns.
Overall, tensions between Ukraine and Russia continue to escalate, causing significant human and material losses.
