The Education Department was engaged in negotiations with several school districts towards the end of the Biden administration. However, these cases have seen little progress since the president assumed office.
A recent complaint was submitted to the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights by a mother from Michigan. She reported that her middle-school daughter experienced severe racial harassment, leaving her traumatized.
When Black History Month began at Chesaning Middle School in central Michigan in 2024, the only Black girl in the fifth grade had already faced numerous racial insults. On the school bus, she was subjected to being called a ‘monkey.’ Fellow students also directed the n-word at her and compared her skin to ‘burnt like a piece of chicken.’
