The North Carolina Republican decided to step down following a recommendation from the House Ethics Committee for censure due to inappropriate conduct toward female staffers. The investigation found no evidence of sexual activity or explicit propositions, but highlighted inappropriate comments and lavish gifts, including jewelry, designer purses, guns, and vacations.
Edwards has denied any wrongdoing and plans to complete his term, which ends on January 3. He addressed his decision by stating, “After much prayer and reflection, I’ve decided to withdraw from my re-election campaign. I will complete my current term. Serving Western North Carolina has been the honor of my life.”
Potential Replacements for Edwards
Local reports suggest five potential candidates to replace Edwards, with one candidate set to face Democrat Jamie Ager in November.
Jennifer Balkcom
Jennifer Balkcom, a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives for District 117 since early 2023, is entering the race. She stated, “This race is too important to sit out. We must hold this seat, preserve our mountain values, work with President Trump’s administration to continue rebuilding Western North Carolina, and make sure Washington never forgets the people who call these mountains home.”
Ken McKim
Ken McKim, known in North Carolina Republican politics, previously ran for the state senate in 2006 and launched a congressional bid in 2021. His platform emphasizes adherence to the nation’s founding documents, protecting individual liberties, controlling government spending, and lowering taxes.
Matthew Burril
Matthew Burril, an investment manager and financial professional, previously ran unsuccessfully for North Carolina’s 11th congressional district in 2022.
Kristie Sluder
Kristie Sluder previously ran for the North Carolina State Senate in 2024 but was defeated by Democrat Julie Mayfield. Her campaign priorities included increasing affordable housing, protecting individual rights, and rebuilding the nuclear family.
Chad Nesbitt
Chad Nesbitt, a businessman and founder of Skyline News, announced his candidacy via Facebook. He mentioned being approached by committee members to consider running as Edwards’ replacement.
Race Dynamics and Predictions
The North Carolina Republican Party will host a meeting to determine Edwards’ replacement. Nominations will occur during the meeting, and candidates must secure over 50% of the vote to avoid a runoff with the two most popular candidates.
President Donald Trump carried the district by 10 points in 2024, and it has not elected a Democrat since 2010. Surveys indicate a challenging path for Republicans to retain the House seat. Forecasts from VoteHub.com show Ager as “narrowly favored” with a 62% chance of victory and an estimated vote share of 51%.
Betting odds on Polymarket give the Democrats a 57% chance of victory, which increased to 66% after the ethics investigation. Experts view the seat as indicative of the broader competitiveness of this year’s midterms.
Christopher Cooper, a professor of political science at Western Carolina University, noted that Democrats do not need to win the seat to have a successful midterm. However, being competitive or flipping the seat suggests the national environment may exceed typical midterm expectations.
