DiJonai Carrington of the Chicago Sky addressed criticisms after posting “WHITE PRIVILEGE @indianafever” on her social media following an incident during a game against the Indiana Fever. The message came after she was ejected for a foul against Sophie Cunningham. While Carrington responded to the backlash, she did not specifically explain her choice of words.
In a reply on X to former NFL player Emmanuel Acho, Carrington stated, “I’ve never once claimed that the assessment of the foul was white privilege (that was your assumption),” suggesting a misinterpretation of her post. She urged Acho to exercise critical thinking and referenced her educational background at Stanford and Baylor as a basis for understanding the topic.
Carrington emphasized that she understands the historical and social implications of the term “white privilege” and would not use it lightly without evidence. Despite clarifying that her post did not refer to the foul, questions remain about its intended target.
The WNBA has yet to issue a statement on Carrington’s actions. The incident involved Carrington committing a Flagrant 2 foul against Cunningham during a game. After the review, Carrington was ejected for striking Cunningham in the face during a play. The altercation led to Cunningham angrily confronting Carrington on the court.
Cunningham, a central figure in the debate around transgender athletes in women’s sports, has been criticized and supported in protests and rallies. Carrington’s history with the Fever includes past controversies, such as mocking then-rookie Caitlin Clark in 2024 and addressing racist abuse from fans.
Besides her basketball career, Carrington has been vocal on social issues, notably opposing Donald Trump and promoting LGBTQ and women’s rights. In her first season with the Sky, Carrington averages 9.8 points and 2.2 rebounds, contributing off the bench for Chicago.
