A 16-year-old suspect has been arrested in Colorado in connection with the murder of Billy Schmidt, a Penn State student. Philadelphia police have confirmed that both suspects, aged 16, will face charges as adults for the robbery and shooting that took place on June 6. The second suspect, Kaiseem Smith, remains at large and is actively sought by authorities, who have released a wanted poster.
In another related case, a 19-year-old named Khadfi Fleming is wanted in connection to a robbery tied to the murder of Billy Schmidt. U.S. Marshals Service noted Fleming is also a person of interest in an incident involving an off-duty police officer in Philadelphia. This officer exchanged gunfire with suspects believed to be stealing his vehicle.
Early Monday, suspects targeted the officer’s Dodge Charger, leading to a confrontation and exchange of gunfire. Although no injuries were reported, the suspects managed to escape. Evidence found at the scene included the damaged Dodge Charger and numerous 9mm shell casings. The suspects later abandoned another stolen vehicle, a Lexus.
The U.S. Marshals Service is actively seeking information on Khadfi Fleming, offering a cash reward for leads. Although uncharged in the Monday incident, Fleming is already wanted on a robbery charge linked to Billy Schmidt’s murder. Schmidt, a 22-year-old student, was killed close to his South Philadelphia home while returning from an NBA Finals watch party. Surveillance video captured Schmidt attempting to retrieve his stolen phone moments before he was shot. His father described him as someone who cared for others and never caused harm.
The search for the suspects began after Schmidt was fatally shot. The U.S. Marshals arrested Azzubair Outen-Fleming, aged 16, in Colorado Springs, approximately a month after Schmidt’s death. He was found hiding at a relative’s home and initially disguised his identity. Philadelphia police reported Outen-Fleming would be charged with murder. The second teen involved, Kaiseem Smith, has since surrendered to Philadelphia authorities.
Billy Schmidt was studying digital journalism and media at Penn State and was set to graduate in December. Two months after his tragic death, authorities are questioning the involvement of Fleming in recent violent events.
