Luis Castillo showcased agility and skill in the fifth inning by quickly fielding TJ Friedl’s bunt and making a precise glove-hand throw to first base. Castillo noted his own surprise at his speed, remarking, “I was impressed too with my speed. I’m 33 years old and was surprised to make that play.” He shared a light-hearted moment with his manager and pitching coach, who found the play impressive.
The Chicago White Sox secured a 5-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds, with a crowd of 24,099 witnessing the event at Rate Field. Castillo delivered an outstanding performance in his second game since joining the Sox on Aug. 1. He allowed one hit, struck out ten, and walked two over seven scoreless innings. “That’s the result when you have confidence in your pitches and plan,” Castillo explained. The only hit against him was a single by Sal Stewart in the first inning. With help from two relievers, the team limited the Reds to just two hits.
Will Venable praised Castillo’s command, stating, “In control the whole time, just the one hit over seven innings, just outstanding.” The teamwork between Castillo and catcher Drew Romo was evident throughout the game.
Offensively, Drew Romo hit a solo home run in the third inning. Reflecting on his technique, Romo noted improvements despite usual struggles. Shortstop Chase Meidroth, recovering from a wrist issue, contributed a two-run homer in the sixth inning, boosting the team’s lead. Venable praised Meidroth for his timing and power, highlighting his positive development.
Castillo’s pitching was supported by strong defense. He struck out two batters in several innings, including an impressive performance in the seventh. Tristan Peters made a notable catch at the wall to deny Matt McLain an extra-base hit. Sam Antonacci demonstrated his fielding skills with a diving stop and throw to retire Héctor Rodríguez.
Castillo expressed gratitude for the defensive support, saying, “The guys that were behind me, they played really well.” His fielding play on Friedl’s bunt further aided his strong performance. Castillo’s 104-pitch outing concluded with three consecutive strikeouts in the seventh inning. Despite being asked if he wanted another inning, Castillo was eager to continue.
Rookie Hagen Smith maintained momentum in the eighth, despite walking a leadoff batter, by striking out the next three. Huascar Brazobán allowed one hit in the ninth, but retired the following batters to secure the win. The victory keeps the Sox leading the American League Central division, ahead of the Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers. Venable acknowledged both Smith and Brazobán for their effective pitching.
