The clip shows Talarico criticizing legislation he described as the “most insidious,” requiring kindergarten and first-grade students to learn Bible stories as objective historical facts. He believed this influenced young children’s worldviews inappropriately.
It was a new state curriculum that would teach Christian Bible stories as historical fact, as the only truth to our youngest students, and I mean kindergarten, first graders,” he said. “These are kids who aren’t able to think for themselves yet. They haven’t formed their own worldviews.
Talarico’s Warning
Talarico argued that imposing such a curriculum amounted to “propaganda” and was morally troubling. His stance gained traction online, prompting commentary from various personalities, including Sen. Ted Cruz.

Mary Elizabeth Castle from Texas Values refuted Talarico’s claims, explaining that the “Bluebonnet curriculum” was intended for English Language Arts education. It aimed to contextualize biblical references in well-known speeches, like Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream.” Many supported this curriculum, saying it enhanced student reading skills by providing historical context to familiar stories and idioms.
Hiram Sasser of First Liberty Institute argued that understanding the Bible’s influence on Western culture is crucial. He stated, “No education is complete without understanding the Bible and its influence.” Sasser emphasized that many courts and the ACLU agree on teaching the Bible from a historical perspective.

Tim Graham from the Media Research Center commented on the broader cultural tensions, stating that definitions of “indoctrination” vary with ideological perspective. He noted Talarico’s opposition to what he views as oppressive uses of religious education.
