Crown Point Quarterback Tyce Custy’s Leadership and Impact

Crown Point football coach Craig Buzea humorously describes senior quarterback Tyce Custy as having the wisdom of a much older person. Custy, who transferred from Valparaiso after moving to Crown Point prior to his junior year, displays this maturity by sharing his quarterback role with others. Previously, he shared this responsibility with junior Cooper Malaski, now a tight end, and currently with sophomore AJ Summers.

“It’s an unusual arrangement,” Custy commented. “Not many teams do this, but it’s been advantageous for us by challenging opposing defenses in multiple ways. Our team becomes a tough opponent with varied quarterback strategies.” At 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds, Custy, committed to Lindenwood, is dedicated to team success.

The Bulldogs stand at 8-0 in the season, earning a number five rank in the Class 6A state coaches poll. With a win over Michigan City on Friday, they can secure their fifth consecutive undefeated season along with a Duneland Athletic Conference title.

Buzea appreciates Custy’s attitude, especially as he shares his role with a promising sophomore. “Usually, one might ask why split time with a Division I quarterback? But we have another Division I talent, AJ, who contributes significantly by making us tougher to defend. Custy’s maturity shines through these arrangements, and he never shows frustration about sharing his role,” Buzea explains.

Custy’s on-field performance is impressive. He has completed 85 out of 120 passes, totaling 1,353 yards and 12 touchdowns, with only three interceptions. He also scored a rushing touchdown and a 10-yard touchdown reception from Summers in a recent victory against Chesterton.

“Tyce’s efficiency is outstanding, completing 70% of passes,” Buzea states. “He is not driven by statistics; he focuses on victory and team accomplishments.”

Wide receiver Kingston Connelly benefits from Custy’s precise throws, tallying 33 catches for 554 yards and seven touchdowns this season. Connelly recounts Custy’s transition from Valparaiso, noting their strong off-field friendship, which enhances their teamwork.

“Upon his arrival, I observed his warm-up with skepticism but was quickly convinced by his skill. Tyce proved himself to be our quarterback and leads by example, showcasing dedication,” Connelly mentions.

Custy, initially on Valparaiso’s freshman team, transitioned smoothly to Crown Point, as he notes. Last season, he completed 70 of 107 passes, amassing 1,069 yards and nine touchdowns, with just two interceptions. “The transition was seamless thanks to the welcoming atmosphere. I’m at ease now,” Custy reflects.

Buzea acknowledges Custy’s growth since his transfer. “Initially, communication was lacking, but he’s significantly improved. Though a quiet leader, we’ve encouraged him to become more vocal as he prepares for Division I football,” Buzea adds.

His commitment to Lindenwood diminishes recruiting pressure, aiding his focus on enhancing his skills. Custy’s progress exemplifies his dedication to becoming a substantial football talent.

Quarterbacks coach Nick Wellman has greatly contributed to Custy’s development. Wellman, who achieved success under Buzea in the past, relates closely with Custy. “Nick’s mentorship significantly refines Tyce’s techniques,” Buzea comments.

Family support plays a crucial role in Custy’s path. His father Brian Custy, a former standout safety at Valparaiso University, mentored him during his formative years, providing guidance.

Custy will graduate after the first semester, moving on to Lindenwood, where he will continue pursuing his football ambitions. As Crown Point prepares for a crucial sectional play against Merrillville, Custy remains focused on team success.

“Our performance shows room for improvement, despite an 8-0 record. Both individually and as a team, striving for excellence remains our goal,” Custy concludes, acknowledging his teammates’ integral roles in any success.
