Key Loss for Maryland Football as Defensive End Suffers Season-Ending Injury

The upcoming football season is critical for Maryland head coach Mike Locksley. The program faces a significant setback following a training camp injury that will impact the team’s defensive strength. As reported by Pete Nakos of On3, defensive end Zahir Mathis sustained a season-ending injury during a practice session on Wednesday. The specific nature of Mathis’s injury has not been disclosed.

In the 2025 season, Mathis demonstrated his athletic prowess with an impressive freshman year. Standing six-foot-six and weighing 220 pounds, he recorded 22 tackles, secured six sacks, and made 8.5 tackles for loss. Mathis’s six sacks ranked second on the team, just behind Sidney Stewart, who tallied seven sacks as a freshman.

Maintaining Mathis on the team was seen as essential for Maryland, especially with uncertainty surrounding Locksley’s future following a recent history of lackluster performances. Over eight seasons, Locksley has achieved a record of 37-49. The Terrapins ended their last two seasons with a 4-8 record, winning only two Big Ten matches.

Maryland athletic director Jim Smith expressed the program’s commitment to player retention and recruiting, emphasizing support for Locksley as head coach. Freshmen Mathis, Stewart, and quarterback Malik Washington formed a promising core last season, contributing positively to the team.

“We are working to strengthen our NIL support for 2026 and beyond and have already seen success for next year,” Smith stated. “We are prioritizing roster retention, recruiting, and competing in the transfer portal… We are optimistic about the young talent in our program and where we are in recruiting.”

With Mathis out for the season, Maryland will rely on Sidney Stewart to step up in his sophomore season. Additional support will come from sophomore defensive end Nahsir Taylor and redshirt sophomore defensive end DD Holmes in their efforts to pressure opposing quarterbacks.

Maryland is set to begin its season at home against Hampton on September 5. The Terrapins will continue their non-conference schedule with games at UConn on September 12 and a home match against Virginia Tech on September 19.
