Los Angeles Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman experienced a frightening moment in their game against the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night. During the top of the eighth inning, Freeman was waiting to catch a pop fly but lost his bearings in the foul territory. In an effort to catch the ball, he accidentally tumbled down the steps of the Royals’ dugout.
Teammates from the Dodgers, along with Royals players and trainers, quickly came to Freeman’s aid. Despite the fall, Freeman was able to walk back up the steps and onto the field, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd. He did exit the game later, but the Dodgers secured a 4-2 win.
“I didn’t hit my head, so that was key,” Freeman shared with reporters post-game. “I’m sore. My kneecaps, shoulder, hand, and wrist all feel sore. I took a fall. But I’m in good spirits.”
Freeman explained that he lost track of the dugout railing while attempting to catch Isaac Collins’ pop-up. He noted, “I went to lean like I was going to use the rail for support to catch the ball — and obviously, there was no rail.”
The Dodgers face an important series against the Milwaukee Brewers, the top team in the National League. Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts commented, “We really dodged a bullet. It looked very scary, but he’s in good spirits, which is a positive sign. He’s just experiencing total body soreness.”
After the incident, the Dodgers advanced their record to 73-48, holding an 8.5-game lead over the San Diego Padres in the NL West.
