Recent Democratic primaries have raised questions about the reliability of polling. In Wisconsin, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley narrowly defeated state Rep. Francesca Hong. This came as a surprise since Hong led by over 20 points in the Decision Desk HQ polling average. A similar upset occurred in Michigan, where Abdul El-Sayed narrowly won against Rep. Haley Stevens despite being ahead in polls by 13 points.
Experts argue that primary polling is challenging due to uncertainties about voter turnout, especially when candidates enter or exit races close to election day. Geoffrey Skelley, chief elections analyst for DDHQ, noted these inconsistencies. For example, Crowley re-entered the race after dropping out, creating confusion among voters.
Polling inaccuracies were evident as Hong’s support remained stable while Crowley’s surged late in the race. A significant number of undecided voters supported Crowley, possibly influenced by Hong’s campaign trail issues and the endorsement from outgoing Governor Tony Evers.
Chaz Nuttycombe from State Navigate pointed out Wisconsin’s open primary structure allowed crossover voting, with Republicans participating in the Democratic primary where their influence possibly swayed the results against Hong. Polls failed to account accurately for late decision-makers switching to Crowley.
In Michigan, nonresponse bias led to an incomplete picture of likely voters. Skelley emphasized that while polls often target specific demographics, they may exaggerate younger voter influence. Primaries tend to attract older, more committed voters. The age factor also affected results, as younger voters supported candidates like El-Sayed and Hong.
Nuttycombe criticized Wisconsin’s voter data transparency compared to states like Virginia, affecting poll interpretation. This signals a need for focusing more on candidates’ percentage support over margins.
“A lesson in life is don’t make assumptions,” Nuttycombe advises regarding polls.
